At Bath Rugby Foundation, we believe every child deserves a fair start in life. When Casey joined our Sport For All programme, they were struggling. Disengaged and easily distracted, they found it hard to focus in lessons and group sessions. Like many young people navigating life’s early challenges, Casey lacked confidence – in themselves, and in the structures around them. But we saw something more: a young person who, with the right support, could thrive.

Through regular participation and consistent encouragement, Casey began to believe in themselves. They started to listen more carefully, take on guidance, and engage fully with each session. That quiet confidence started to grow – not only in their sporting ability but in how they communicated and worked with others. With every high five, every “well done”, every moment of being heard and included, Casey began to feel part of something positive.

As Casey’s confidence grew, so too did their life skills. They became more focused, more resilient, and more aware of how to be part of a team. Skills like communication, self-regulation, and perseverance – essential both on and off the pitch – began to take root. In Casey’s own words: "It’s helped with my listening and understanding of rugby – and improved my passing." These are real, transferable skills that go far beyond sport.

That progress didn’t stop at school. Casey now plays rugby at Midsomer Norton RFC, building on the foundations laid through Sport For All. This move beyond our programme is exactly what we strive for – creating pathways to independence, where young people take ownership of their journey and start to shape their own future. "I want to get really good at rugby – I need to keep working on listening and teamwork," Casey told us. It’s that growth mindset – paired with the tools to succeed – that will carry them forward.

Casey’s story shows what’s possible when young people are given a fair start, not just in sport, but in life. With the right environment, nurturing relationships, and belief in their potential, young lives change. That’s what we do at Bath Rugby Foundation – we build confidence, develop life skills, and create lasting pathways to independence. And in doing so, we change young lives.
