Latest news Hands-on learning ignites engineering aspirations at our Alternative Learning Hub A recent hands-on session at Bath Rugby Foundation’s Alternative Learning Hub has sparked a young learner’s ambition to pursue a career in engineering, highlighting the transformative power of practical education. During the session, Key Stage 3 students constructed motor-powered cars from scratch using everyday materials like lollipop sticks, wooden wheels, glue guns, and batteries. This engaging activity aimed to teach principles of energy and movement through experiential learning. One student was particularly inspired, expressing his passion for practical work and sharing his aspiration to become a car engineer. This revelation prompted staff to explore work experience opportunities to support his career goals. The success of this session aligns with broader educational insights in the UK. Studies have shown that active learning approaches, such as hands-on projects, can significantly enhance student engagement and understanding, particularly in STEM subjects. For instance, a meta-analysis published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that students participating in active learning environments were 1.5 times less likely to fail and scored six percentage points higher on exams compared to traditional lecture-based courses. Our Alternative Learning Hub continues to champion innovative educational methods that inspire and empower students. By integrating practical experiences into the curriculum, the Hub not only enhances academic learning but also helps students discover and pursue their passions. Get involved Bath Rugby Foundation is seeking local professionals and organisations to support its mission.
