Our Mission Our stories Alicia When Bath Rugby Foundation partnered with Maddy’s Mark to bring fun and engaging rugby sessions to St Nicholas Primary School in Radstock, it marked the beginning of a transformative journey for young girld like Alicia. For many children, it was their first taste of rugby — and for Alicia, it was a chance to discover new strengths, both physical and emotional. Before Bath Rugby Foundation’s sessions, Alicia had never played rugby. But from the very first session, she was hooked. She loved the physicality of the game, realising that each activity was helping her build strength. “Rugby makes me feel strong and confident,” she shared, reflecting on her newfound empowerment. One of the most inspiring lessons Alicia learned was that rugby is a sport for everyone. Regardless of size, background, or ability, every player has a role to play. This inclusivity made a big impact on her and fuelled her determination to continue playing rugby beyond the Maddy’s Mark sessions. Team spirit played a major role in Alicia’s experience. She loved being part of a team where everyone supported each other. “Everyone cheered each other on, and it was a great feeling to be a part of it,” she said. Her favourite part of the game? Tagging the opposing team’s players — a skill that requires agility, quick thinking, and confidence. Maddy’s Mark was created to honour the legacy of Maddy Lawrence, who tragically passed away after sustaining an injury while playing rugby. Maddy’s love for rugby and her belief in inclusivity, resilience, and team spirit live on through the foundation. By partnering with Bath Rugby Foundation, Maddy’s Mark ensures that more young girls can experience the same joy, confidence, and sense of belonging that Maddy found on the rugby pitch. The sessions at St Nicholas Primary School brought these values to life. For Alicia, the experience was about more than learning to play rugby. It was about self-belief, friendship, and the power of teamwork. The opportunity to participate in Maddy’s Mark sessions allowed her to discover new strengths and develop a love for the game. “Thank you for being amazing and for teaching us how to play rugby,” Alicia said, reflecting on her experience. The collaboration between Maddy’s Mark and Bath Rugby Foundation is making a lasting impact on young girls like Alicia. Through fun, inclusive rugby sessions, students are building confidence, developing life skills, and discovering the joy of being part of a team. For Alicia, the experience has sparked a passion for rugby that she’s determined to pursue. Her story is a powerful reminder of how sport can inspire, uplift, and empower young people — a legacy that Maddy’s Mark continues to honour every day. Maddy's Mark Bath Rugby Foundation is thrilled to partner with Maddy’s Mark to empower girls aged 8-10 by building their confidence, fostering self-acceptance, and offering them the chance to represent their school in rugby and join their local club. Through this partnership, we deliver five weeks of rugby-based sessions for three schools in BANES and Somerset, each linked to a grassroots rugby club, creating pathways for these young players to engage with the sport and develop a lasting passion for rugby.
