Our Mission Our stories Huw Solly Huw Solly: A Champion for Inclusive Rugby Huw’s journey into rugby began at just 13, despite battling significant health challenges. His determination to succeed saw him progress from school rugby into Colts (U16) level, where he earned a place in the first team. Defying expectations, Huw continued to play at county level and moved into men’s rugby in Reading before university. At Hull, his passion for the sport remained unwavering, earning him a place in the first team and later the captaincy of Hullenisians RFC’s second team. After university, Huw joined Chippenham RFC’s 2nd XV until his deteriorating health forced him to step back. Years off the pitch couldn’t extinguish his love for the game, and an opportunity to try Walking Rugby rekindled his passion. Realising there was a gap in opportunities for people facing similar challenges, Huw took the initiative to fundraise through his local council and establish a Mixed Ability Rugby team—Chippenham Cavaliers. Recognising his determination and the importance of his mission, we at Bath Rugby Foundation stepped in to support him. Together, we’ve helped Huw turn his vision into a reality, showing that with the right support, rugby can be truly accessible for everyone. With our support through Project Rugby, Huw’s vision of creating the Chippenham Cavaliers has come to life, embodying everything inclusive rugby stands for. Huw, who wears a hearing aid, and his wife, Rachel, who has a cochlear implant, are not only passionate players but also advocates for the deaf community. Their involvement sends a powerful message: rugby is a sport for all, and everyone deserves the opportunity to participate. The Cavaliers have grown into a community of over 50 players—many of whom never thought they’d have the chance to play rugby. For Huw, creating a space where people of all abilities feel welcome and can build their confidence is the ultimate achievement. Under his guidance, the Cavaliers have represented Bath Rugby at Twickenham during the Premiership Final and at a Project Rugby tournament at Harlequins The Stoop—a testament to the incredible progress they’ve made. Huw’s story is a powerful example of what can be achieved through determination, the right support, and a shared commitment to breaking down barriers. His impact reaches far beyond the pitch; he’s built a supportive environment where people can discover their love for rugby, develop new skills, and, most importantly, feel part of something bigger. Without his unwavering leadership and passion, none of this would have been possible. Huw’s journey is far from over. He’s committed to expanding the Chippenham Cavaliers and making Mixed Ability Rugby accessible to more people. His goal is to inspire other clubs and communities to embrace the values of inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that rugby can be enjoyed by people of all abilities. Through his work with Bath Rugby Foundation and Project Rugby, Huw is proving that sport is for everyone. We are proud to stand alongside Huw as he continues to pave the way for more inclusive rugby opportunities, turning barriers into bridges and proving that a love for the game can change lives.
