Our Mission Our stories Rachel Solly Rachel is a player with our Mixed Ability Rugby team, Chippenham Cavaliers, and her journey exemplifies the power of perseverance and the spirit of inclusivity that lies at the heart of Bath Rugby Foundation’s work. For 4 years, Rachel stood on the sidelines, cheering on her children and supporting Chippenham RFC. But her dream was always to be on the pitch herself, playing the game she loved. Being deaf, Rachel was repeatedly told that rugby wasn’t a sport for her. Coaches and well-meaning advisors expressed concerns about the risks posed by her hearing aids and cochlear implant, discouraging her from even trying. But Rachel’s passion for rugby never wavered. Despite the barriers, she refused to be defined by her disability. She knew deep down that rugby was meant for everyone, and she was determined to prove it. When Chippenham RFC launched a Mixed Ability Rugby team, Rachel leapt at the chance to be part of something special. She joined the Chippenham Cavaliers with her trademark enthusiasm, finally given the opportunity to play alongside people who valued her for her skills and tenacity, not for what others might see as limitations. From that moment, Rachel’s energy and love for the game shone through, inspiring others—especially women and the D/deaf community—to step outside of their comfort zones and give rugby a try. But Rachel’s impact doesn’t stop at the touchline. Off the pitch, she’s a passionate advocate for inclusivity, encouraging her teammates and showing by example that rugby truly is a game for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or identity. Her willingness to mentor others and promote opportunities for participation embodies everything that Bath Rugby Foundation stands for. “I was advised not to play rugby because of my cochlear implant, but I was determined to find another way,” Rachel said. “I wasn’t going to let my deafness stop me from being involved in a sport I love. To have the opportunity to play rugby has been amazing.” Rachel’s journey is one of courage and resilience, showing what’s possible when barriers are broken down and people are given the chance to shine. We are so lucky to work with Rachel, whose passion and positivity reminds us all why inclusive rugby matters. She doesn’t just play the game; she changes it. Manage Cookie Preferences
